Jonny Walker, World’s top Extreme Enduro racer, Confirmed for 2015 KENDA TKO

Red Bull KTM’s Jonny Walker is arguably the world’s top Extreme Enduro racer and he has accepted an invitation to compete at the 2015 KENDA AMA Tennessee Knockout. The TKO will be the first-ever major US race for the twenty four year-old British rider that has won the Romaniacs, Erzberg and Hell’s Gate Extreme enduros in 2015. The 2015 KENDA Tennessee Knockout will take place on the weekend of August 15-16 at the Trials Training Center in Sequatchie, Tennessee.

Walker had this to say about racing at the KENDA Tennessee Knockout:

I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to race in the States. With so much of my racing taking place in Europe, getting the chance to race against new riders on a track I’ve not been to before is really exciting. Things have been going really, really well so far this year so it would be great to keep my winning streak going. I know that guys like Cody Webb will be tough to beat, but I can’t wait to race against him and guys like Taylor Robert outdoors. It’s also going to be great to race in front of some of my US fans and sponsors. It’s going to be a blast.

Walker will face off against Cody Webb, the two time defending KENDA Tennessee Knockout winner. The two riders have raced each other several times in the past as both competed in the 2015 FIM SuperEnduro Championship, where Webb finished second and Walker third in the championship.

Webb has also traveled to Europe on a few occasions to compete at Erzberg and the Tough One events, where Walker came out ahead but that was a few years ago and on more familiar terrain for Walker. So the two should be well-matched when Webb is on home turf.

Taylor Robert Confirmed for 2015 KENDA Tennessee Knockout

FMF/KTM’s Taylor Robert has finished second at the last two KENDA Tennessee Knockout events and will be back in 2015 looking to move up to the top of the podium. The fifth annual TKO will take place on the weekend of August 15-16 and the Arizona native has proven to be quick to adapt to the wet, technical East Coast terrain at the amazing Trials Training Center.

Taylor Robert 2015 X Games post race

“The TKO is one of the toughest yet most fun races in the United States” said Robert. “There are definitely parts where everyone struggles and gets frustrated but the feeling you get when you cross the finish is amazing”.

Robert missed several months of racing to start the 2015 season due to a wrist injury but earned a silver medal at the X Games Enduro X in June to show that he is back up to speed. He passed Cody Webb late in the main event to take the spot and that is likely the man he will have to battle again to take his first KENDA Tennessee Knockout win.

Cody Webb and Ty Tremaine Confirmed for 2015 KENDA Tennessee Knockout

The RPM KTM duo of Cody Webb and Ty Tremaine have confirmed that they will be back at the 2015 KENDA AMA Tennessee Knockout looking take the top podium spots. Webb, the two-time defending TKO race winner and 2014 GEICO AMA EnduroCross champion, will certainly be the favorite but nothing will be easy on the Trials Training Center terrain.

“I’m super excited about returning to the TKO this year. It’s a great event and has been gaining popularity and exposure” Webb said. “The terrain is perfect for an extreme event. Add in the high temperatures, high levels of humidity and the likely possibility of a thunderstorm rolling in, this race has all aspects of an extreme enduro,” Webb continued.

Ty Tremaine, Webb’s FMF/RPM/KTM Team Maxxis teammate, may be the biggest challenger. The nineteen year old Nevada resident won the 2015 FIM SuperEnduro Junior championship to back up his 2014 GEICO AMA EnduroCross Junior title so he is certainly the top young rider coming up. Tremaine was in line for a top finish at the 2014 TKO until a last lap mechanical issue dropped him to eleventh.

“The TKO’s a really fun event especially coming from the west coast because the terrain is so much different and the weather can change in the blink of an eye” Tremaine said. “It is one of my favorite races of the year and not only does it take skill but it is one of the most physically demanding races as well. I’ve been training really hard and riding a lot to prepare myself and I’m hoping for a solid result” Tremaine concluded.

Pre-Qualified Riders Confirmed for 2015 KENDA Tennessee Knockout

The fifth annual KENDA AMA Tennessee Knockout, presented by Moose Racing and SRT, will take place on August 15-16, 2015. Cody Webb took his second straight win in 2014 after finishing second to Tennessee native Mike Brown the previous two years. Both riders are expected to be back at the Trials Training Center in 2015 looking to take the biggest share of the $10,000 purse.

TKO 2015

Webb, who is also the defending GEICO AMA EnduroCross Champion, will face a long list of challengers for the 2015 KENDA TKO title. FMF KTM’s Taylor Robert has finished second the past two years and is anxious to stand on the top step of the podium. And AmPro Yamaha’s Grant Baylor finished on the podium in his first attempt at the TKO in 2014 so he learned the terrain and will likely improve in 2015 as well. Current GNCC Champion Kailub Russell also made a first attempt at the TKO in 2014 and finished a disappointing 14th so you can be sure he will be looking to challenge for the podium as well.

The top five finishers at the previous TKO events have included riders from EnduroCross, Trials, National Enduro, GNCC, WORCS and even the Enduro World Championship. So it is a great mix of backgrounds facing off on an extremely challenging course with a large purse on the line.

Mike Brown Wins 2012 KENDA Tennessee Knockout; Cody Webb and Russell Bobbitt fill out the podium

2012 TKO Podium Brown Webb BobbittMike Brown repeated as the winner of the second annual KENDA Tennessee Knockout, presented by Monster Energy but it was far from easy. During the third Knockout round, it appeared that Brown was going to be eliminated from the event. He was hopelessly stuck in one of the special test sections and had his helmet off and steam spewing from his KTM as he tried to find a way up a wet and rocky creak. He needed to finish in the top three in his group and more importantly, finish the loop in time to start the main event.

With the hillsides filled with screaming fans, Brown finally found a way to get through the section and finished out the loop in a qualifying position for the main event. He then took the lead away from Beta’s Cody Webb on the first lap of the 10 lap main event and withstood steady pressure for over thirty minutes before edging away over the last few laps to take the win.

“I thought the race was over for me when I was stuck up in that Creek and I was physically overheating” Brown said after the main event. “But then I realized that most of the other riders were also stuck in the same section so I kept pushing and pulling my bike up the ledges that were slick from the rain that hit just before the start of that third round. The main event was really tough but I managed to keep from making any big mistakes.”

The TKO format automatically qualifies riders from all of the major off road racing series into the Sunday Knockout rounds and there are open slots for non-qualified riders to qualify from Saturday. Forty Four riders started the Sunday program that began with a single hot lap around the “short course”, which took Webb just over three minutes and fifteen seconds to complete. Brown, Kyle Redmond and Colton Haaker were all very close with 3:27, 3:28 and 3:29 runs. Husqvarna’s Andrew Delong was fifth with a 3:36.

The second round would have the riders ride another lap against the clock but this time on the 13.5 mile “long course”. The riders started in 15 second intervals and Brown caught Webb and the two exchanged the lead several times and crossed the finish line with Brown just ahead physically, which meant he beat out Webb by 16 seconds with a time of 44:28. Bobbitt, Fahringer, Delong, Jordan Ashburn, Whibley, Haaker, Brad Bakken, Redmond, Max Gerston, Zach Love rounded out the top ten. Only the top 25 riders would move on and now be placed into groups of five for a head to head race for another lap around the long course but with a few additional “challenge” sections added.

An intense thunder shower hit just at the end of the second round, which made it very difficult for some of the last riders on the loop and would make round three much more challenging. For each group of five riders, only the top three would move on to the 15 rider final. This was the round that would prove extremely difficult as the rain combined with the new challenge sections increased the time to just over fifty minutes for Webb, who set the fastest time to win his group. Haaker, Whibley, Fahringer and Delong each won their groups to take the front row spots for the main.

Brown, Ashburn, Bobbitt and Alex Bedley each finished second in their groups to earn second row starts (no other riders finished from Delong’s group). Hawaii’s Aaron McKnight, Zach Love and Dustin Gibson were the final three qualifiers, which meant that only twelve riders had made it to the final round. Husqvarna’s Redmond dropped out in spectacular fashion after he cleared the most difficult section with the crowd cheering; leaves that had collected in the bottom of the skid plate caught fire and burned through a radiator hose to create a smoky conclusion to his day.

Since Webb and Haaker seemed pretty fresh after the first three rounds, they appeared to have the upper hand going into the final and jumped out to the early lead. Brown started from row three and quickly got into second when several riders got hung up in the EnduroCross section. Webb got stuck attempting the most difficult line up a steep hill, which allowed Brown to take the lead. Webb and Haaker were close behind and with a ten lap main on the short course, it was expected to take about 40 minutes and fitness was going to play a role in the extremely humid conditions.

Haaker stayed close to the leaders for the first three laps before he began to lose touch but was still safely ahead of the intense battle between Bobbitt, Whibley and Fahringer, who all exchanged positions several times. Delong pulled off due to physical exhaustion at the midway point and joined Love, Gibson and Bedley on the sidelines. Haaker pulled over on lap seven when the heat and humidity had him seeing stars. Webb stayed very close to Brown for the first seven laps but then he was the next to crack, which allowed Brown to open up a fifteen second gap that he held to the finish. Bobbit finished just a few seconds ahead of Whibley to take the final podium spot and Fahringer took fifth ahead of Ashburn.

The race featured riders from several different disciplines and in the end, Brown, the 2012 X Games Enduro X gold medalist took the win over fellow EnduroCross regular and former AMA Trials Champion Cody Webb. Russell Bobbit, the multi time National Enduro Champion took third ahead of current GNCC point’s leader Paul Whibley. Nick Fahringer, another Enduro regular, rounded out the top five.

AmPro FMF Yamaha’s Whibley and Ashburn Confirmed

DR Tested Dec 2011Jordan AshburnPaul Whibley and Jordan Ashburn are two of the hottest riders in the GNCC series and both have confirmed that they will be back to compete in the 2012 KENDA Tennessee Knockout. Whibley, the current GNCC Championship point’s leader and 2009 champion finished fifth in the 2011 TKO and proved to be a contender in the “Extreme Enduro” conditions found at the Trials Training Center.

Jordan Ashburn, the former GNCC XC-2 Champion from Tennessee rode incredibly strong last year to finish sixth at the TKO.

“The KENDA Tennessee Knockout is a really tough event and Paul’s incredible fitness will allow him to compete for the win and Jordan is excited to compete in his home state again” stated Randy Hawkins, the AmPro Yamaha team owner and off-road racing legend. “They both learned a lot by competing last year and expect to fight for the win”.

Team Beta’s Cody Webb and Max Gerston confirmed

Cody Webb, 2011 Tennessee Knockout, Drew Ruiz PhotoCody Webb, the 2010 AMA Trials Champion, has made a very successful transition to EnduroCross racing and his silver medal at the 2012 X Games further backed that up. The factory Beta rider finished second at the inaugural KENDA Tennessee Knockout event last year and he is now looking for the win.

When asked about the 2012 TKO, Webb had this to say: “I’m hoping for a more extreme event in this year’s TKO. Last year, the race was difficult, but not comparable to the extreme races I have ridden in Europe. The course was a long and fast paced race similar to an Endurocross race. Coming from a trials background, I prefer a long slow paced difficult course that wears down the competition. No matter what the course offers, I’m excited to return and see the resurgence of extreme races in the US”.

max-gerston-2012Webb’s Beta teammate, Max Gerston will also be participating in the KENDA Tennessee Knockout.

The 2011 GEICO EnduroCross Amateur Champion is now racing expert and is definitely a young rider to watch.

Mike Brown wins inaugural Kenda Tennessee Knockout Extreme Enduro; Tennessee native outlasts a tough field of riders

We got this guide today from Sean Finley at Digital Throttle who’s been working with us on the Kenda Tennessee Knockout Extreme Enduro. Photos by Drew Ruiz.

TKO 2011, Podium, 1st - Mike Brown, 2nd Cody Webb, 3rd - Bobby Prochnau, photo by Drew RuizSequatchie, TN (August 28, 2011) – Tennessee native Mike Brown outlasted a tough field of over fifty riders to win the KENDA Tennessee Knockout, fueled by Monster Energy. The first time “American Extreme Enduro” lived up to its billing as a tough race as Brown noted at the finish that the 40 minute long main event “Was tougher than anything I have ever done. At the halfway mark, I thought I would not be able to finish but I was leading so I kept pushing”.

Cody Webb, the factory Beta rider and 2010 AMA Trials champion that has become a regular podium finisher in EnduroCross events finished second and was within striking distance of Brown on the final lap before stalling his bike. Bobby Prochnau, the super tough Canadian KTM rider finished third.

Taddy Blazusiak, the pre-race favorite was eliminated from the competition during the first Knockout round when a minor crash knocked the fuel injection system loose and forced him to pull out of the event. Blazusiak was a good sport though and stuck around all afternoon to cheer on the other riders.

TKO 2011, Mike Brown, photo by Drew RuizThe four round format started with a single timed lap on a very extreme “short” course that took Cody Webb three minutes and twenty five seconds to complete. Brown was just two seconds behind and GEICO Honda’s Kyle Redmond was another four seconds back. This set the starting order for the 50 riders that would go into Knockout round one with the fastest riders going first and getting the advantage of less dust but also the disadvantage of having to pick the lines for the first time on the ten mile “long” loop.

TKO 2011, Cody Webb, photo by Drew RuizBrown showed his strength on the long loop with a 39 minute and 7 second time that set the standard. Webb was very close with a 39:25 lap and Prochnau came in with 39:56. Kyle Redmond was fourth at 40:59 and Am-Pro Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn at 41:41. Paul Whibley was next in line followed by Colton Haaker, Rory Mead, Michael Williams and Dustin Gibson rounded out the top ten riders.

TKO 2011, Bobby Prochnau, photo by Drew RuizA total of twenty five riders moved forward to Knockout round two, which was a head to head race with five riders each in five groups. The top two riders in each group would move on to the ten rider final. Brown and Whibley qualified from group one. Webb and Haaker qualified out of group two. Prochnau and Mead qualified out of group three. Williams and Redmond qualified out of group four and Ashburn and Palmer qualified out of group five. Husqvarna’s Jamie Lanza and Ryan Sandoval were among the non-qualifiers along with GEICO Honda’s  Scott Watkins and Kawasaki rider, Gary Sutherlin.

Brown rocketed to the front of the pack at the start of the ten lap main event while Webb found himself on the ground in the first turn. Prochnau ran second followed by Whibley while Colton Haaker and Rory Mead battled for forth. Webb moved past four other riders on the first lap, which took around four minutes.

Michael Williamson, a relatively unknown Tennessee based rider that turned heads all day with his speed unfortunately crashed after not making it up an extremely difficult alternate line up the side of a cliff and dropped out on the first lap. Brown pulled a few seconds gap and rode conservative lines while several riders battled for second. Webb finally got to second at the halfway point and began to reel Brown in. By then, Haaker had taken a tumble with an aggressive line on a downhill to take him out of contention.

Whibley had a chain derail on his YZ250 2-stroke on lap five and lost a few positions. After nearly 40 minutes of racing, Webb moved to within striking distance of Brown on the final lap but stalled and tipped over to provide the gap that Brown needed to take the victory. Rory Mead had also closed in on Prochnau but slid out in a turn while trying to take the final podium spot. Whibley climbed back up to fifth after battling with an impressive Ashburn. Redmond and Palmer were the final two finishers in seventh and eighth.
